Owens Farm Vision Statement –

Rare Willamette Valley prairie, oak savanna and riparian habitats and species will be restored and managed at Greenbelt Land Trust’s Owens Farm property, providing a key link within a system of restored, functional habitats in the area. Owens Farm will provide unique opportunities for environmental education, nature-oriented recreation and natural area research for generations to come. This significant natural area will be a focal point for partnerships between Greenbelt Land Trust and nearby landowners, public agencies, and private organizations to conserve and enhance the natural values within the Jackson-Frazier watershed.

Lupine Meadows Management Plan

Lupine Meadows is a spectacular collection of upland and wetland habitats capable of supporting a large diversity of plants and animals, including significant populations of endangered species. This Management Plan is based on a vision for the site that emphasizes habitat conservation, active restoration, and outreach opportunities to promote education about Willamette Valley ecosystems and restoration.

Land Stewardship

The Greenbelt Land Trust is dedicated to stewarding all protected lands. We follow the highest standards for our conservation easement monitoring and perform site visits on an annual basis. A recently completed Stewardship Manual comprehensively documents all the policies and procedures governing our stewardship activities.

The Greenbelt Land Trust performs regular restoration activities on the properties we conserve to enhance habitats and associated species.  Members and volunteers are crucial to this effort.  Management plans guide all activities on protected lands. An example of these management plans are recently adopted plans for our Owens Farm and Lupine Meadows properties.

Owens Farm

Owens FarmThe Greenbelt Land Trust formed an Owens Farm Advisory Committee in 2005 to help oversee the development of a restoration and management plan for the property. Salix Associates was hired to prepare the plan and worked closely with the committee to develop goals and objectives and target conditions for the site. This plan was funded by the generous support of the Landowner Incentive Program, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant program administered by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, by the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, and by donations from Greenbelt Land Trust members.

The highlight of the plan is the restoration of native prairie and savanna habitats, both of which are rare and imperiled in the Willamette Valley. Active long-term management will be necessary to maintain these habitats free of encroaching woody vegetation and invasive species. Restoration techniques will include prescribed fire, manual and mechanical clearing, and other methods. Native habitat restoration at Owens Farm will require continued funding, working with our partners to determine the best restoration methods, and cooperation with a variety of organizations to implement restoration efforts.

Lupine Meadows

Lupine Meadows is a spectacular collection of upland and wetland habitats capable of supporting a large diversity of plants and animals, including significant populations of endangered species. The Greenbelt working with the Institute for Applied Ecology recently completed a Restoration and Management Plan for the site. Click here to view the Lupine Meadows Management Plan.

Lupine MeadowsHabitat at Lupine Meadows will be managed for high species diversity and quality examples of Willamette Valley prairies, with conservation goals linked to the draft Recovery Plan for Western Oregon and Southwestern Washington Prairies. Public access will be managed for acceptable levels of recreation, possibly including a trail through the property. Planned tours, volunteer and school restoration activities, and research projects by local scientists and students will also be conducted.
